Prepared in Palma de Mallorca around 1375 by a Jew, Abraham Cresques, and his son, Yehuda Cresques, in commissioned by the king of Aragon Juan I. As a gift to the French king, it has long been kept in Paris (now in the National Library of France ).

The atlas originally consisted of six sheets of parchment , which were subsequently cut in half and pulled onto wooden shields. The first pages deal with issues of cosmography , astronomy and astrology (in particular, the spherical shape of the Earth is noted). Practical tips for sailors are also provided.

The last four sheets of the atlas are a detailed portulan map with information on overseas countries by Marco Polo and John Mandeville . According to the Arab tradition, the north is from below . The affiliation of cities is indicated by flags .
