Story
The film is based on a real event. On May 5, 1902, the 23-year-old cobbler worker Hirsch Lekert , a member of the Jewish Bund , attempted to assassinate the Governor-General of Von Wale of Vilna .
On the eve of May 1, leaflets appeared in the city calling for support for the May Day demonstration of the Vilna workers. The May Day procession of workers was dispersed by the Cossacks, several demonstrators were killed, and a large group of demonstrators were arrested. Among the latter there were many Jewish workers. Fearing pogroms, the Jewish bourgeois elite sent their representatives to the governor with a request to punish those arrested, but not to touch the rest of the Jewish population. The governor promised to prevent the pogrom; He ordered the arrested to be flogged. In response to this outrageous order, the worker of the shoe shop, Hirsch Leckert, decided to kill the Governor General. With a shot from a revolver, he wounded the Governor General, Hirsch Lekkert was arrested and sentenced to death.
