Biography
July 1, 1934 entered the fleet by fenrich . October 1, 1936 promoted to lieutenant. He served on the battleship Admiral Count Spee and the light cruiser Karlsruhe. In May 1937 he was transferred to the submarine fleet. Since October 1937, the officer in charge of the U-20 submarine.
World War II
From August 12, 1939 to July 28, 1940 he commanded the U-61 submarine, on which he made 8 campaigns (having spent a total of 131 days at sea). In the first campaign (October 1939) sank 6 vessels with a displacement of 20,754 gross .
From September 24, 1940 to October 19, 1941 he commanded the submarine U-106 (Type IX-B) - 3 military campaigns, 182 days at sea. In the first campaign, Esten sunk 2 ships (displacement of 13,640 gb), and in the second - to the shores of Africa - 8 vessels (44,820 gb), his attack on the SL-68 convoy was especially successful when he managed to damage the British battleship Malaya .
March 26, 1941 was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
Since October 1941, he commanded the 9th fleet of submarines in Brest . Since March 1942, he was an officer of the Admiral Headquarters at the headquarters of the commander of the admiral in the North Sea, was engaged in issues of conducting underwater war in the waters of the Arctic.
On September 2, 1943, Esten was appointed commander of the U-861 submarine cruiser (Type IX-D2). Esten commanded this boat until the end of the war and made 2 voyages on it (a total of 252 days at sea) - first to the coast of Brazil, and then to Madagascar and further to Indonesia.
On January 15, 1945, he withdrew his boat from Indonesia and, after a difficult trip on April 19, arrived in Trondheim (Norway).
In total, during the hostilities, Esten sunk 19 vessels with a total displacement of 101,741 gross tons and damaged 4 vessels with a displacement of 51,668 gross tons.
He died on August 5, 2010 [4] .
