Sports career
Until the mid-70s, tennis in Israel was not among the popular sports, and Shlomo Glikshtein was the first Israeli tennis player to succeed internationally. He started playing tennis at only 10 years old, and only 16 years old left football and basketball to focus on tennis. During this period, he was already one of the ten strongest juniors in the world, and from the age of eighteen he defended the colors of the Israeli team in the Davis Cup . From 18 to 21, Glikshtein served in the IDF and did not go abroad, participating only in competitions inside Israel. At 19, he first became the champion of Israel and after that he won this title eight more times in a row.
Finally, in 1979, Glikshtein, after completing military service, transferred to the category of professionals. Already at the beginning of next year, he won a professional Grand Prix tournament, the Tasmanian Open in Hobart . In the same year, having lost in the second round of Wimbledon to Bjorn Borg , he won the consolation tournament Wimbledon Plate . In the autumn of the same year, Glikshtein reached the final of the Grand Prix tournaments twice more, but could not win them; on the way to the final of the tournament in Tel Aviv, he beat Ilie Nastas , who at that moment had already surrendered his position as world tennis leader.
1981 was just as successful for Glikshtein; he won his second singles tournament, now in New York , and played three times in the doubles finals. In the same year, he became the first Israeli to win the Maccabi Games Tennis Tournament. At the peak of his career, in 1982 , Glikshtein reached 22nd place in the ATP ranking . In 1983, he made a major sensation in his career, winning the first racket of the world of Ivan Lendl in the first round of the tournament in Monte Carlo .
After that, Glikshtein once again played in the finals of the Grand Prix tournament in singles and three times in pairs. The last major success for him was reaching the final of the French Open in doubles in 1985 , where his partner was Swedes Hans Simonsson ; thus, he became the first Israeli in the final of the Grand Slam tournament , and it was almost 20 years before Andy Ram repeated this success.
In 1986, the Israeli team, thanks to the efforts of Glikshtein and Amos Mansdorf , defeated Switzerland in the European group finals and, after two unsuccessful attempts in the previous years, first entered the World Group. The following year, the national team achieved even greater success by defeating the Czechoslovak team in the World Group and reaching the quarter finals of the Davis Cup, where they lost to the Indians ; This success of the Israeli team was surpassed only after 22 years. In just 12 years, Glikshtein played 66 matches for the national team and won 44 victories in them (a record record for Israel).
In the last years of his career, Shlomo Glikshtein also added to his titles three victories in the Challenger class tournaments held in Israel: two in singles and one in doubles.
The last year in tennis for Glickstein was 1988 ; this year he played only in pairs and won the Challenger in Jerusalem paired with Mansdorf. In the same year, he headed the Israeli Tennis Center in Ramat Hasharon . Until 1999, he led the Israeli national team in the Davis Cup.
