Maria Theresa (reef)

Fragment of the map of the Pacific of 1881 [1]

The Maria-Tereza Reef ( eng. Maria Theresa Reef , fr. L'île Tabor ) is a “ ghost island ”, a reef allegedly located east of New Zealand and south of the Tuamotu archipelago , “opened” by whaler Asaf P. Taber in 1843 and named after his native American town, Maria Theresa. According to another version, the name is given in honor of the ship.

Geographical coordinates were defined as 37 ° 00 ′ south. sh. 151 ° 13 ′ h. (in the fundamental Soviet Atlas of the Antarctic, its location is shown at [5] ). For a long time (until the 1960-1970s) the reef was depicted on maps. On French maps, the reef was called Tabor Island ( Table Tabor ; from the mistakenly read surname of the discoverer Taber), in German - Maria Theresia ( Maria-Theresia-Riff or Maria-Theresia-Insel ) [6] .

Legends Spread

Maria Theresa Reef is one of the many non-existent reefs in the South Pacific , depicted on maps until the second half of the 20th century (among others are Jupiter, Vacusett , Ernest-Legove , Rangitika reefs). It is also depicted on at least three recent maps (the French world map of 1989, the Ukrainian world map of 2000, and the American Atlas of the World 2005).

Fame reef brought the novels of Jules Verne's " Children of Captain Grant " and " Mysterious Island ". Contrary to popular belief, Maria Theresa reef is not a fantasy writer, unlike Lincoln Island; Jules Verne sincerely, like his contemporaries, believed that the island existed.

Modern searches

The island was searched in the indicated place in 1957, but they did not find any land or traces of the recent submersion of the earth under water: the ocean in the immediate vicinity of these coordinates is very deep. In 1983, the coordinates of the island were defined as 36 ° 50 ′ south. sh. 136 ° 39 ′ h. d., which is east of the previously known location of more than a thousand kilometers. However, this time the searches were unsuccessful.

Possible explanations

Geologist Konstantin Ranks suggests [7] that such discrepancies in the coordinates of the island are due to the fact that he was a floating island - the formation of pumice from the volcanic eruptive volcano (the so-called ), which so long drifted South Pacific circulation , which acquired vegetation and nesting birds.
