Story
Two promising young physicists Sergei Krylov ( Alexander Belyavsky ) and Oleg Tulin ( Vasily Lanovoi ) from a student's bench are seriously studying such a natural phenomenon as a thunderstorm . Friends dream of learning how to control the weather . But gradually their paths in science diverge: Oleg is ready to compromise, to sacrifice principles for the sake of success, and Sergey believes that truth is more expensive.
The general, whom Tulin addresses, at first flatly refuses to allow dangerous experiments, but then, under his pressure, he resolves them under his own responsibility.
During measurements on an airplane in the heart of a thunderstorm, a young graduate student Richard, who is trying to save the films with the most valuable measurement results, dies in a falling airplane (while everyone has already left the airplane with parachutes).
