History
Under Attack was recorded on August 2, 1982 . The group was going to release a new studio album, however, due to the nervousness of the working environment, the project was postponed indefinitely (as is now obvious, forever), and instead it was decided to release a double compilation album from previous singles along with two new songs, which were The Day Before You Came (released as a single in October 1982) and Under Attack .
The song Under Attack was a commercially unsuccessful release. The popularity of ABBA fell significantly, and the two previous singles could not get anywhere on the top line of the charts. Under Attack estimates are quite contradictory: some fans tend to believe that the song is ahead of its time, others indicate that the song was too easy and straightforward compared to other ABBA songs. And even if the song got into the top 5 in Belgium and the Netherlands, and also made its way to the top 20 of a number of other European countries, it did not become a hit. The highest achievement in Britain was the 26th position [1] ; in Australia, where the band’s popularity recently exceeded the fame of The Beatles , Under Attack became a sad swan song, having hardly entered the charts in 96th position. After such an unsuccessful release by the standards of ABBA, many decided that the group would go on a “vacation”, but they never got together anymore.
Bjorn Ulveus said that Under Attack is a good song that, if released a little earlier, would be a hit. Benny Andersson, in turn, noted that the song, despite all its advantages, is far from the best record of ABBA.
Under Attack is present in the musical Mamma Mia! , being in it the only composition that did not become a big European hit. Only Honey, Honey , whose success in Europe was limited by the geography of the release, and some ABBA songs, like singles that didn’t come out at all ( Our Last Summer and Slipping Through My Fingers [2] ), fit such a definition.
