History

Lae was founded in the 20s of the 20th century in the gold mining area, on the site of the German mission station Lehe . The name of the village was changed to Lae . In 1935, the population of Lae consisted of a little more than a hundred Australians who worked mainly in aviation and the maintenance of gold mines in Kokoda .

On July 2, 1937, the outstanding American pilot Amelia Earhart set off from Lae on her last flight.

During World War II , from 1941 to 1943, Japanese fighter units were based in Lae. In the same period, as a result of allied air raids, the city was destroyed. He was recovering around an old airport that was no longer used. The runway of the airfield has survived to our time.

In 1991, South Pacific Games were held in Lae and Port Moresby .

Geography

Lae with its 100,677 inhabitants (as of 2012) is the second largest city in Papua New Guinea. according to the 2000 census, the population of the city totaled 78,038 people [1] . Located on the northeast coast of New Guinea, washed by the Pacific Ocean , in Huon Bay. The administrative center of the province of Morobe . Near the city is located Nadzab International Airport. The basis of the local economy is the harvesting and processing of crops on the coffee and tea plantations surrounding Lae.

In Lae, there is the famous Botanical Garden, occupying more than 100 hectares, which brings together representatives of all types of flora of New Guinea.
