History

The Anglo-Italian Cup has been held since 1969 , when Swindon Town won the Football League Cup , but could not participate in the Fairs Cup , as it played in the Third English Division . The cup was discontinued in 1973 , but already in 1975 the competition with the same name was resumed, but for semi-professional teams. The last draw of the Anglo-Italian Cup for semi-professionals took place in 1987 . In 1992, the cup was resumed between professional clubs of the second divisions of England and Italy . But after four seasons, in 1996, the cup was finally completed due to the complete indifference of the teams to this tournament and an increase in the number of hooligan actions between fans.

Rules

Initially, both countries ( England and Italy ) put up six teams that were not played in European tournaments . They formed three groups, two teams from each country. Matches in the group were held in two circles, but teams from the same country did not play with each other. At the end of the group competition, a team rating was compiled for each country in terms of the total points scored and goals scored. The leaders of this rating met among themselves in the final match.

In 1973, the rules of the tournament changed. Both countries put up 8 teams, which were divided into two groups of 4 teams from each country. In the group, each team played with all teams from another country in one match. Based on the results of four matches, two tournament tables were compiled according to the number of points scored for each group of each country - English and Italian ratings. The winners of each rating went to the semifinals, where they played with the winner of the rating of another group of their country - English and Italian semifinals. Thus, the Italian and English teams reached the finals. But this regulation was at the tournament for only one draw.

Since 1976, England and Italy again began to declare 6 clubs in the tournament. Teams were divided into three groups of two clubs in each group from the country. Each club played four games with teams from another country, two at home and two away. Based on the results of these four games, a team ranking was made according to the points scored for each country from all groups. The winners of the groups played among themselves in the final.
