Biography

Born in Yamanashi Prefecture . He grew up in Kamakura , where he moved at the age of three with his family. He graduated from the Political and Economic Department of Waseda University . He began to write in high school. Participated in the NEWWAVE doujinshi (only one issue was published). After graduating from the university in 1981, in search of work that would allow him to combine it with the continuation of literary activity, he stopped at teaching at Seibu College, established by the eponymous supermarket chain Seiji Tsutsumi (he conducted seminars on philosophy and modern thought). He began to write actively on the threshold of his thirtieth birthday. A series of unpublished works of those years was followed by the story “A Simple Song” (プ レ ー ン ソ ン グ, 1990 ), published in Gunzo . From the first years of his creative activity, he established close relations with the writer Nobuo Kojima , which lasted until the latter's death in 2006 .

After receiving the Noma Award for Debutants in 1993 for the story “Breakfast on the Grass” (草 の 上 の 朝 食), he stopped working at the College, focusing on literature classes. For the story “The Threshold of this Man” published in Shinto (こ の членов., 1995 ), where, on behalf of the narrator, he narrates the modest everyday life of his acquaintance, he was awarded the Akutagawa Prize , gaining the praise of Keizo Hino and other jury members. The novel “Remembering the Seasons” (季節 の 記憶, 1997 , Tanizaki Prize , Hirabayashi Prize, W Prize ) was widely recognized and praised. Developing the theme of understanding everyday life, Hosaka introduced the narrative on behalf of the child into the work. The work is permeated by the author’s thoughts on time and natural rhythms.

The next milestone in the writer's work was the novel “Conversation Piece” (カ ン バ セ イ シ ョ ン ・ ピ ー ス, 2003 ), which took him more than two years to create. Against the backdrop of events unfolding in the old house, Hosaka meditates on the essence of death and memory. The work is considered the most significant work of the writer. After its publication, Hosaka completely departed from the creation of fiction, turning to the genre of philosophical and literary essay .
