The streets of St. Petersburg

See also List of St. Petersburg Streets

St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 , but during the first three and a half decades in the capital under construction there were no official names of streets and squares. The official names of some highways were first established by the Commission on the St. Petersburg Building on April 20, 1738 . Then the names were given to the 18 most significant streets ( Upper and Lower Naberezhnaya streets; Voznesenskaya , Nevskaya and Srednyaya Prospektivny; Admiralteyskaya ; Isaakievskaya ; Bolshaya and Malaya Lugovaya; Bolshaya and Malaya Germanskaya; 1st and 2nd Pushkarskaya), 5 squares (Isakievskaya Senate , Trading St. Isaac's ), several canals and bridges. From the middle of the 19th century, street names were appropriated by senate decrees or city council decrees.

After the revolution, many city names were changed to "revolutionary." First of all, the names associated with the names of the reigning persons and their entourage, as well as the church, were renamed. There are many names associated with the name of Lenin ( Lenin Square, Lenin Street, Lenin Park , Leninsky Prospekt , Ilyich Lane, Leninsky District), as well as other figures of the revolutionary movement, Soviet party and government figures. Religious cult names have disappeared.

On January 13, 1944, historical names were restored for the most important streets and squares: Admiralteysky Prospekt and Embankment (from 1922 - Prospect and Embankment Roshalya ), Bolshoy Prospect V.O. (Proletarskaya Pobeda), Bolshoy Prospect P.S. (Karl Liebknecht), Vladimirsky Prospect (Nakhimson), Palace Embankment (January 9th) and Ploshchad (Uritsky), Izmailovsky Prospekt (Krasny Komandirov), Isaakievskaya Ploshchad (Vorovskogo), Kazanskaya Ploshchad (Plekhanova), Liteiny Prospect (Volodarsky), Maly Prospect V. O . (Zheleznyakova), Field of Mars (Victim Square R Evolution), Nevsky Prospect (Prospect of the 25th of October), Sadovaya Street (3rd of July), Middle Avenue of V.O. (Musorgsky), Suvorovsky Prospect (Soviet).

The post-war years, when dozens of new streets were named after the defenders of Leningrad, became a new stage in the name of city streets and squares. In the Soviet years, many newly paved streets were also named in honor of the leaders of the international communist and labor movement, in honor of the capitals of the socialist countries and the twin cities of Leningrad .

Since the second half of the 19th century, streets located close to one another have received names on a certain topic: for example, streets in the Alexander Nevsky part of the city were named after the cities of the Poltava province ( Kremenchug , Mirgorod , Poltava , Romenskaya ). In the Soviet years, the tradition of thematic street names was continued.

In 1991, the city was returned to its historical name - St. Petersburg (and several dozen city names). In the 1990s, the return of historical names to the streets, avenues and squares of the city continued.

House Numbering

At the end of the 18th century , the first numbering of houses was carried out in St. Petersburg. But, unlike the modern system, the numbering was not along the streets, but common throughout the city. So, for example, in 1791 in St. Petersburg there were already 4,554 house numbers. This number did not include houses located in the guards settlements.

Later, the city was divided into several parts, and the numbering was already in these areas. A similar system has survived to our time in some cities, for example, in Venice .

In 1834, another reform of the house numbering was carried out - numbers were assigned to houses in the streets in increasing order, with even numbers on the right side of the street and odd numbers on the left.

In 1858, even numbers were given on the left side of the street, and odd numbers on the right. Such a system has been preserved in St. Petersburg to the present day. Here are its basic principles:

  1. the numbering is from the water arteries: in particular, on the left-bank side of the Neva, the numbering is from the Main Admiralty (for example, Nevsky Prospect ) or from the bank of the Neva ( Liteiny Prospect ), or downstream ( Galernaya Street ), on the right-bank side, along the Neva ( Bolshoy Prospect V.O. ) or “transversely first from its shores” ( V.O. lines ). A number of streets are numbered from the main streets with respect to them: for example, Mayakovsky , Uprising , Radishchev , Chekhov streets, in contrast to Liteiny Avenue parallel to them, count down from Nevsky Prospect and Zhukovsky Street . Vladimirsky Prospect leads the numbering from Nevsky Prospect.
  2. if you face the increase in house numbers, then on the right side there will be an odd side of the street, and on the left - the even side. St. Petersburg is the only city in Russia with a similar numbering system for houses. There are exceptions: for example, on Tipanova and Sevastyanova streets, Syzranskaya , Sveaborgskaya streets, Novokolomyazhsky prospekt [1] [2] [3] and Yakovlevsky lane - vice versa.
