John Bagnell Bury ( born John Bagnell (JB) Bury ; October 16, 1861 , Clontibret , Ireland - June 1, 1927 , Rome ) is an Irish historian, Byzantine, classic art historian and philologist who studied mainly the political and administrative history of the Byzantine Empire , which he regarded exclusively as a direct continuation of the Roman Empire . One of the main initiators of the revival of interest in the history of Byzantium among English-speaking historians. Bury was one of the authors of the 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica (1911), in the 4th volume of which an article is devoted to him [6] . In 1911, under the direction of Bury, the publication of the Cambridge History of the Middle Ages was launched; he also developed a plan for the publication of the Cambridge History of the Ancient World (published since 1923).

Biography
Born and raised in the Irish county of Monaghan , in the village of Clontibret , where his father was rector of the [* 1] Anglican Church of Ireland . At first he studied with his parents, and then at Foyle and Londonderry College in Derry and at Trinity College in Dublin, which he graduated in 1882. In 1893, he became a professor in the same place, occupying the department of modern history, where he taught for nine years. In 1898 he was appointed regius professor of Greek - a position that he combined with the professorship of history [7] .
In 1902, he became a regius professor of modern history at Cambridge University , reluctantly saying goodbye to Dublin. One of his students at Cambridge was the medieval historian Stephen Ransiman .
Bury worked in Cambridge until his death. He died in Rome at the age of 65 and was buried in a Protestant cemetery.
Compositions
John Bagnell Buri was one of the main initiators of the revival of interest in the history of the Byzantine Empire among English-speaking historians, where, after Edward Gibbon, Byzantine studies were largely ignored. The works of John B. Buri vary in topics ranging from Ancient Greece to the papacy of the 19th century, and are both scientific and accessible to non-specialists. The first truly authoritative work of John B. Burie was the biography of St. Patrick , published in 1905. The best studies of John B. Buri are devoted to the period of the history of the late Roman Empire , early medieval Byzantium , as well as the Middle Eastern regions . In 1896-1900, he prepared for publication the work of Edward Gibbon " The Decline and Destruction of the Roman Empire " , supplementing it with an introductory article and notes. This publication is still considered to have not lost its historical relevance.
