Sergey Viktorovich Gaponov was born on March 5, 1937 in Gorky , in the family of radio-physicists Viktor Ivanovich Gaponov and Maria Tikhonovna Grekhova . He became interested in physics during his studies in high school. In 1965 he graduated from the Gorky Polytechnic Institute named after A. A. Zhdanov [1] [2] [3] .

In 1964-1978 he worked at the Gorky Institute “Salute” (as a technician, engineer, senior engineer, leading designer of the sector head, laboratory head [4] ), and from 1978-1992 he worked at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (where he was head Department of Solid State Technology and Semiconductor Devices, Head of the Department of Solid State Physics, Deputy Director of the Institute [4] ). Since 1989, he is concurrently the head of the Department of Electronics of Nizhny Novgorod University named after N. I. Lobachevsky . After the creation in accordance with Decree of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences No. 173 dated September 28, 1993, the Institute of Physics of Microstructures of the Russian Academy of Sciences was appointed director of this institute and held this position until 2009 [1] [5] [6] .

In 1993, S.V. Gaponov was awarded the academic title of professor . On March 31, 1994, he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Department of General Physics and Astronomy (Physics). On May 25, 2008 he was elected a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Department of Physical Sciences (Physics of Nanostructures) [1] . Since 2009 - Advisor to the RAS [4] .

He is a member of the Scientific Council on the problem of “Physics of Semiconductors”, the Scientific Council on the problem of “Current Trends in Condensed Matter Physics”, the Presidium of the Joint Scientific Council for Spectroscopy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a member of the editorial board of the journal “Nano- and Microsystem Technology” [5] [7] .

Scientific activity

The main areas of research of S. V. Gaponov include laser physics , X-ray optics , questions of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter , physics of solid-state nanostructures , high-temperature superconductivity [5] [7] . He is the founder and leader of the scientific school “Metal superlattices and nanocluster structures. Physics and technology of multilayer and nanocluster structures based on metals and superconductors ” [4] .
