Sardinian Cathedral - the local cathedral of the Christian church , held in Sardik (modern Sofia ). For Socrates Scholastic and Sozomen, this Cathedral dates from 347 , but in the 19th century, researchers came to the conclusion that the Sardinian Cathedral was held in 343 or 344 . [1] This dating was accepted by A. S. Pavlov and Nicodemus (Milash) .
The cathedral was convened at the joint request of the emperors Constant and Constance II on the border of the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. Both Western (94 delegates) and Eastern (76 delegates) bishops took part in the work of the Council. Hoseus of Cordoba presided. The second place at the Council was occupied by the Sardinian bishop Protogen. On the reasons for convening the Council, John Zonara writes:
The Sardinian Council was in the reign of Constantius, son of Constantine the Great . He, pestering the heresy of the Arians , used efforts to distort the dogmas and definitions of the First Council . Learning about this from the report of the then pope, his brother Constantus, who ruled in old Rome, threatened his brother with war in a letter, if he did not stop worrying the Church and hesitating the Orthodox faith. [2]
The Arian party present at the cathedral tried to convict Athanasius the Great , who also arrived at the cathedral, but the Western bishops, who agreed with the Nicene creed , acquitted Athanasius ( Servatius Maastrichtsky was among the defenders of Athanasius). The Arians left Sardica and retired to Philippopolis , where they opened their own special cathedral, where they condemned St. Athanasius and the deeds of the Sardinian cathedral. [3] Socrates Scholastic informs about those who remained in Sardik that they “ first of all condemned them for their removal, then deprived Athanasius of the prosecution’s rank, and finally, while retaining the Nicene confession, rejected the word“ unseemly ”, confirmed the consonants even more clearly, and wrote messages about it , sent them everywhere . " [four]
The Council adopted 20 rules that were included in the Orthodox Church in the general code of church law . The rules were immediately drafted in two languages: Latin and Greek. The decisions of the council are devoted to issues of church governance, and some of the rules relate to the order of governance exclusively in Western churches. A number of council rules (3-5) provide for the case of disputes between bishops to contact the pope to resolve them. In the West, the rules of the Sardinian Council were for some time attributed to the First Ecumenical Council to give them special authority. [one]
