The middle ear is the cavity between the eardrum (the inner border of the outer ear) and the inner ear; the Eustachian tube opens into the middle ear. Acute otitis media is divided into banal, secretory otitis media, idiopathic hematotympanum, acute otitis media for infectious diseases, and traumatic otitis media. Acute otitis media in some cases (for example, with inadequate treatment) can turn into chronic. Depending on the characteristics of the clinical and morphological manifestations, chronic otitis media is divided into mesothympanitis , epithympanitis and mesoepitympanitis .

Etiology
Pathogenesis
Clinic
Symptoms of otitis media in most cases appear within a few hours. These may include:
- earache, possibly quite severe;
- partial hearing loss;
- fever.
In case of rupture of the eardrum, spotting from the ear and pain relief may occur.
Diagnostics
Treatment
In case of acute otitis media, conservative (non-surgical) treatment is usually used. Depending on the stage of acute otitis media - catarrhal or purulent - a decision is made on the appointment of antibiotics. With purulent otitis media, a course of antibiotics is prescribed in tablets or in the form of injections for at least 5-7 days. Taking these drugs can prevent the development of complications.
With catarrhal otitis media, the so-called expectant management is recommended (only after the consent of an ENT doctor!). During the first 48 hours of illness, parents monitor the condition of the child and treat it exclusively with antipyretic drugs and local therapy (nose drops, minicompresses with ear drops). Antibiotics are used only if during the observation the condition of the child does not get better (pain persists and the temperature does not decrease).
