Oxbridge ( Oxbridge ) - Oxford and Cambridge universities, the oldest in the UK [1] [2] , the most important of the " ancient universities ", using tutorials as the main form of study, unlike other British universities. The term is formed by the merger of the first syllable in the word Oxford and the last syllable in the word Cambridge . The word Oxbridge first appeared in 1849 in the novel of the English satirist William Thackeray Pendennis. By the mid-50s of the twentieth century, the word firmly entered the vocabulary of the British, and it began to be used even in official sources and in print publications in the sections of the survey of educational systems [3] [4] .
Oxbridge, as having a long history, is usually contrasted with the University of red brick - six prestigious universities in England, who achieved this status in the early XX century.
