History

Slavutich is the youngest city in Ukraine. The decision to build it as a new city for permanent residence of Chernobyl workers and their families after the Chernobyl accident was made on October 2, 1986. And already in November-December of the same year, design was carried out (a group of architects led by L.V. Vavakin ), and in December construction of the city began with the forces of eight Soviet republics. March 26, 1988 issued the first warrant for the settlement of apartments. In fact, first settlement was already in 1987.

The territory of Slavutich is an exclave of the Kiev region on the territory of the Chernihiv region , from which, after deciding on the construction of the city, a part of the lands of the Repkinsky and Chernihiv regions was allocated. The city is located between the Desna and the Dnieper , among pine forests at the Nerafa junction on the railway connecting Chernihiv with the Yanov station.

Slavutich - a city of regional subordination, located at a distance of 10 km from the left bank of the Dnieper River , 120 km north of Kiev , 40 km west of Chernigov ; at a distance of 50 km west of Slavutich is the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. With the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Slavutich has a railway connection to the station Semikhody ; bus - in the southern direction of the road, to Chernobyl and Chernobyl; water communication - from the port of Anchor along the Dnieper and Pripyat to the nuclear power plant. Until 1986, the Slavutich station was called the Neraf roadway.

The convenient economic and geographical position of the city is due to its location at the intersection of rail and road routes. Thanks to them, Slavutich is connected with Kiev, Chernigov and other cities of Ukraine and neighboring states by the Republic of Belarus and Russia (the distance to the border with the Republic of Belarus is 12 km, to the border with Russia - 100 km).

The territory of the city is 253 hectares, functional zones on an area of 500 hectares are located outside the residential zone of the city.

Architects and builders from eight union republics participated in the construction of the city: Lithuania , Latvia , Estonia , Georgia , Azerbaijan , Armenia , Ukraine and Russia , which gave the development of each urban complex (quarter) a national flavor. As a result, the city is now divided into thirteen quarters: Baku, Belgorod, Vilnius, Dobryninsky, Yerevan, Kiev, Leningrad, Moscow, Riga, Tallinn, Tbilisi, Chernihiv, Pechersky, each of which has its own special architecture and atmosphere. The city’s development area is 7.5 km² , of which 2.5 are residential areas, the rest are functional areas.

Social infrastructure

Over the years, a modern social infrastructure has been created in Slavutich. Its development is one of the factors of a stable demographic situation in the city. 10 programs are being implemented for socially unprotected groups of the population, aimed at preventing drug addiction and alcoholism among young people, rehabilitation of children with disabilities, rehabilitation, development of science and education.

A Social Psychological Center has been created in the city, which provides socio-psychological, consultative and informational assistance to the population, organizations and state authorities. The institution’s specialists conduct individual consultations with psychological problems, group and public events (trainings, seminars, educational games, round tables, holidays, exhibitions) and others. One of the leading activities of the Center is sociological and socio-psychological research, which allows you to display the psychological state of the population, to receive more complete information about problems in various spheres of society. The institution provides psychological assistance to persons who have resettled from the area of the ATO and the territory of Ukraine, uncontrolled Kiev administration, as well as military personnel participating in the ATO and members of their families.

Four comprehensive schools have been built in the city, a Lyceum, a Center for the Protection of Children, a House of Children's Creativity, a library and information center for children, fitness centers with a total area of 3.5 thousand square meters, a youth sports school, a stadium, and a yacht club. Since 2000, a branch of the National Technical University of Ukraine (KPI) has been operating. Among young athletes there are winners of the World Cups, Europe, Ukraine in many sports. At its five departments, about 800 children study. Since 1988, the Children's Art School has been operating in the city. Slavutich DSHI is one of the best in the Kiev region. The school brought up a galaxy of great musicians, artists, artists, popular and famous not only in Ukraine but also abroad. The school has always been and is the cultural center of Slavutich.

The preschool education system has six kindergartens. In each kindergarten there are local history groups, music and sports halls, swimming pools with physiotherapy exercises. The UNICEF program “Slavutich is a child-friendly territory” is being introduced.

Also in the city there is a youth center, a modern communication center, the city administration, an Internet cafe, numerous sports grounds, modern hospitals and a hotel. About 80% of the city’s apartments are located in five-nine-story houses, the remaining 20% are in cottages for one or two families.

Population

A part of the population of Slavutich are former residents of Pripyat , of which eight thousand in 1986 were still children. Many residents still work at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, dealing with issues of current operation, supporting the creation of infrastructure for decommissioning the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and the conversion of the Shelter facility into an environmentally friendly system; They work in a 30-kilometer exclusion zone, monitoring and researching there. They get to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant by transporting the enterprise (electric train) that travel from Slavutich to the nuclear power plant.

Slavutich is characterized by an unusually high birth rate and low mortality rate. As a result, Slavutich is the city with the lowest average age of the population in Ukraine. More than a third of the inhabitants of the city are children. The economic depression provoked by the closure of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and the lack of motivation of the city's youth caused its outflow from Slavutich. As a result, there is a tendency to increase middle age.

Current Status

The economic and social situation of the city is highly dependent on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Prior to the closure of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 2000, nine thousand city residents worked there, that is, approximately half of the adult population. After the closure of the station, three thousand people continue to work there, who are involved in the decommissioning of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Previously, eighty-five percent of the city’s budget was financed by a nuclear power plant. In order to attract new investors to the city, it was given the status of a free economic zone . A retraining program for former station employees is also ongoing.
