Biography
Bahman Mirza Kajar was born on October 11, 1811 in Tehran . Representative of the Turkic clan Kajarov , Bahman Mirza was the son of the Persian throne successor Abbas-Mirza Kajar . His mother, Princess Asiya Khanum, came from a noble family of Kajars - Davalu.
In 1831, Bahman Mirza was appointed Governor of Ardebil by order of his grandfather Feth Ali Shah . After the death of Feth Ali Shah in August 1834 , Bahman Mirzu and the other sons of Abbas-Mirza are arrested and imprisoned in the Ardebil Citadel. They are accused of conspiring against the newly crowned Mohammed Shah . In the same year, under pressure from his mother, Mohammed Shah, Bahman Mirza was released from prison and was appointed Governor of Tehran on December 21, 1834 . Then until 1841 he remained at the post of ruler of Burjuhid, Silahor and Hamadan . He was also awarded the rank of Field Marshal of Iran in 1834 . After the death of Gahraman Mirza Kajar, the control of Azerbaijan passes into his hands.
As the Governor General of South Azerbaijan , Bahman Mirza wrote to his brother Mohammed Shah in Tehran about the need for reform, Europeanization and democratization of society. But, slandered by Mirza Agasi , upon arrival in Tehran, Bahman Mirza was forced to flee under pain of arrest. In May 1848, on the “Lankaran” steamboat, Bahman Mirza sailed to Baku , from where he headed to Shemakha , and a few days later to Tiflis .
Having moved to the Caucasian governorship of the Russian emperor in Tiflis , he calls his family from Tehran (7 wives and 19 children), and after them come his values and a huge library of manuscript editions at that time.
The tsarist government greeted Bahman Mirza with great honors - he was assigned a life-long pension of 6 thousand chervonets a year and promised residence in any place in Russia. After some hesitation, Bahman Mirza asked for permission to settle in Shusha , and on October 4, 1851 he moved here with his large harem, children and relatives.
He built a large palace complex fenced by a high stone fence, which included a two-story house with 15-16 rooms, round balconies, a large oval hall, a garden, which houses houses of five to six rooms for each of the wives and numerous utility rooms premises, including stables, barns, kitchens, etc. Here, on his orders, a school for his children, a library, a mosque and a bathhouse are built. In 1905, the Bahman Mirza palace was burned by the Armenians.
In Shusha, Bakhman Mirza replenished his harem with nine more wives, and thus, by the end of his life, he had sixteen, and the number of children exceeded sixty - 31 sons and 32 daughters. Three of the Kurdish concubines were sent by Bahman Mirza to his sister from Tabriz .
In the Russian Empire, Bahman Mirza and his descendants officially retained the title of Persian princes, which was added to their names when writing. In the Russian manner, they were titled “Eminences,” and since 1887, at the Highest Command, with the titles of “Grace”.
Most of the sons of Bahman Mirza served in the Russian and Persian armies. On this occasion, in 1884, the Russian magazine “Son of the Fatherland” wrote: “Many of his adult sons (Bakhman Mirza) are in military service, some in Russian, others in Persian. In almost all Caucasian dragoon regiments, among the officers there are either sons or nephews of Bakhman Mirza. One of his sons, Mahmoud Mirza, was headquarters captain in the Nizhny Novgorod Dragoon Regiment during the last Turkish campaign, and at the end of the campaign he was called to Persia by his uncle Shah and now commands the rank of general in the Persian Life Guards. ” So, nine of his sons and their children were generals of the Russian army and were awarded high prizes - Shafi Khan, Feizulla Mirza , Reza Gulu Mirza, Akper Mirza, Emir Kyazim Mirza , Magomedali Mirza, Samed Mirza, Mahmoud Mirza, Amanulla Mirza .
Bahman Mirza was the founder of a galaxy of talented public and state figures. Among them - scientists, writers, military. An outstanding scientist of his time, he wrote several scientific works on the history, ethnography and geography of the native land, and was known as a man of advanced views. His famous work is “Shukurnamei Shahinshahi” (“Thanks to the Emperor”), where, based on rare archival materials, a six-century history of the Caucasus is described - from Genghis Khan to Aga Muhammad Shah Kajar . Part of the Bahman Mirza library is kept at the Institute of Manuscripts of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
Bakhman Mirza died on February 11, 1884 in the city of Shusha and was buried in the cemetery of the cult complex Imamzade, near the Ibrahim Mosque in Barda . During his lifetime, Bahman Mirza ordered to build for himself a tomb mausoleum, consisting of three rooms with domed ceilings. The first, the most spacious, serves as a kind of hallway, in the second there are niches for books and lamps and a fireplace, in the third lies the remains of Bahman Mirza Kajar.

When Bahman-Mirza moved to Russia at the age of 37 in May 1848, he already had nineteen children from his seven wives. However, most of the children of the prince were born during his life in the Caucasus - in the territory of modern Azerbaijan and Georgia. According to the same family information preserved in the letters of the granddaughter of Bahman-Mirza - Nazira-Sultan-khanum, Bahman-Mirza had fourteen wives during his life in Shusha (from 1851 to 1884), some of whom married a prince in Shusha [22] .
Vladimir Peredolsky, who accompanied Bahman Mirza to the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873, reported that the prince had only eleven wives, and by that time only five of them were still alive. Researcher Eldar Ismailov does not exclude the possibility that Bahman-Mirza could have entered into a new marriage even after 1873, given that the birth dates of his children born after 1873, who were younger than the age of not only his grandchildren, but even the eldest great-grandson is Prince Feyzull Mirza who was born in Shusha in 1872.
