Biography
A. V. Khvostenko-Khvostov was born on April 4, 1885 in the village of Borisovka (now the Belgorod region in the family of an icon painter. From 1907 to 1917 he studied at MUZHVZ . His teachers were such famous masters of the brush as V. Baksheev and S. Ivanov (general Department), M. Kasatkin (figure class), A. Arkhipov (full-scale class), Ap.Vasnetsov (peyzhzazhny class), K. Corin (portrait-genre class). Since 1916, collaborated with the Moscow comic magazine "Alarm-clock". In 1917 , together with K. S. Malevich , A. A. Exter , V. G. Meller , he joined the Moscow Union of Artists. 918 - 1919 studied in the art workshop of Alexandra Exter in Kiev. In the autumn of 1920, together with V. Yermilov and sculptor B. Kratkom, he participated in the creation of a research and production workshop - a new research and production combine of the Bavgauz type, “wherever there are no professors , not students, but only masters and students. ”In 1920–1921 , he created campaign posters, artistic advertising, and decorated the advertisement stands. Since 1920 he has been working on theatrical scenery, including for opera and ballet, in Kharkov and Kiev, usually in a constructivist style.
Participation in Agitprop
The artist created the first samples of revolutionary cosmism. In 1929 he painted the panel “Beware, Entente, Labor is Coming!” (Kiev) to the All-Russia May Day Sunday Celebration. By the day of meeting the guests of the 2nd Congress of the Comintern, Khvostov-Khvostenko brightly decorated the city of Kharkov. In 1921 he created an 8-meter canvas “Work, Science, Art” for the Ukrosta hall in Kharkov. Designed in the tradition of folk decorative painting agitpoet them. Creativity in the years 1941-1945
In the early days of the war, he was the chief consultant in disguising objects in the Kharkov Military District. In the years of the Great Patriotic War he again turned to agitation-mass art. In Kharkov, and then in Magnitogorsk (Kazakhstan) draws "TASS Windows", reviving the tradition of "Window GROWTH". In the fall of 1941, he created a poster "Let's Fascist Hydra!". The themes of the posters of the artist at that time were diverse. In some posters he celebrated the feat of the Soviet soldiers in the name of the Motherland, others painted the heroes of the rear, who worked selflessly in the name of Victory. There were also posters containing sharp satire on the Fuhrer and his thugs.

The layout of the design of the play “Zaporozhets beyond the Danube”, performed by Khvostov-Khvostenko and presented in the Soviet pavilion at the International Exhibition in 1937 in Paris (France), was awarded a silver medal. He designed the Pavilion of the Ukrainian SSR at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow, 1939.
He participated in three Decades of Ukrainian art and literature in Moscow in 1936, 1951, 1960.
Pedagogical activity
In 1921-1934, 1938-1941 and 1945-1947 - professor and head of the theater department of the Kharkov Art Institute. Among his students are A.Volnenko, V.Grechanko, E.Kovalenko, D.Ovcharenko, A.Plaksy, V.Ryfin and others.
Social activities
Since 1939. - Member of the Board of the Union of Soviet Artists of Ukraine. Twice elected deputy of the Kharkov Regional Council of People's Deputies.
He died on December 16, 1968 . He was buried in Kiev at the Baikov Cemetery .
Family
The father, Veniamin Stepanovich Khvostenko, at the beginning of the twentieth century went from Borisovka to Moscow on foot to paint icons for Moscow churches.
Brother, Vasily Khvostenko, (1896-1960) graduated from Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Together with Vl. Mayakovsky, he created “Windows of GROWTH”. One of the first to write pictures about Lenin: “Lenin on an armored car”, “Lenin in Smolny”, “Lenin among the Red Guards”.
