The first flight took place in 1999 . Developed by the Brazilian company Embraer on the basis of the ERJ-145 aircraft using the Erieye active phase-shift Doppler radar station of the Swedish company Ericsson Microwave Systems ( Saab AB ). It has been in service with the Brazilian Air Force since 2001 and was purchased by a number of other countries.
The R-99 aircraft is intended for control and guidance of air defense fighters, electronic surveillance, patrolling borders and the economic zone and assisting in search and rescue operations.
Erieye radar has a maximum target detection range of 450 km, and for a fighter target of 350 km.
