The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine

The album was produced by Bob Johnston . The album marks the return of Dylan to the acoustic sound and folk music characteristic of his first albums.

John Wesley Harding was exceptionally well received by critics and sold well, reaching 2nd place on the American charts and leading the British. It is noteworthy that Dylan did not allow the label to engage in active promotion of the album. Less than three months after its release, the album was awarded RIAA gold status. Although Dylan refused to release any song from the album as a single, the song “ All Along the Watchtower ” became one of his most popular songs after Jimi Hendrix made her cover version .

In 2003 , the album took 301st place in the list of 500 greatest albums of all time according to Rolling Stone magazine .
