Story

Starry date 1672.1: Enterprise explores the planet Alpha-177. As a result of an accident, a geologist technician damages his arm and is immediately teleported to the ship. When transferring something happened to the equipment and Mr. Scott had to work hard to lift the man on board. For some time the transporter behaves strangely, but Scott copes with the problem and only advises the technician to properly clean the form. A little later, Captain Kirk returns to the ship. The conveyor worked without incident, but after moving the captain feels somewhat disoriented. Scotty accompanies him out of the transporter room. A minute later, the transfer process begins independently in the empty transporter room and the second captain Kirk appears on the ship. He immediately instructs the device to "forget" about his transfer.

The second Kirk goes straight to med case and rudely demands from Dr. McCoy a bottle of brandy. McCoy is confused by the abrupt change of mood of the captain. In the transporter room, meanwhile, Scotty runs into an interesting event: by transporting the pet of Lieutenant Sulu, instead of one animal, he received two. One of them is very timid and quiet, the second, on the contrary, angry. Here Scotty realizes that there is something wrong with the transporter. He gives the command to the geological expedition to wait a bit until he resolves the problem. Meanwhile, the second, embittered Captain Kirk enters the cabin of foreman Janice Rand , waits for her and tries to do something with her, but the foreman successfully fights off, scratches his face and runs away. At the same time, with these events, the first captain Kirk begins to reveal signs of weakness and indecision. The second Kirk takes the phaser away from the guard and then hides on the lower decks of the Enterprise. But the first Kirk easily finds the second, and Mr. Spock disables the second. Spock is not sure what to do in this case and is limited so far by observation of the captain's evil nature, which, meanwhile, reveals signs of fatigue, which may end.

Thus it was found that in such a divided state both Kirkas would not last long. In addition, on the surface of the Alpha 177, time also matters. It is getting colder and colder there, and the expedition, if not transported to the ship in time, has every chance of freezing. Scotty discovers a problem - damage to the ionizer, but its recovery for normal operation can take about a week. However, with the help of Spock, Scotty is trying to get around the problem. Trying to combine both entities on Sulu's pet, but the experiment fails. Combining the two entities in one, horned dog dies from overstrain. Meanwhile, the first, indecisive Kirk, having given in to the promises of the second, angry, entity, releases the second Kirk, unaware of the deception. The second Kirk, knocking out the first, hurries to the bridge and orders the crew to take a course and leave the planet's orbit. The first Kirk follows the second, tries to resist him, and soon the evil Kirk faints from overstrain. The first Kirk drags him into the transporter room. The transporter, in fact, is not yet ready, however, with his fingers crossed, Spock dematerializes both Kirk, as the time for them is over. This time the experiment ended safely. When Spock takes Kirk back on board, the captain is alone and in good condition. First team: "Take the landing aboard!". On the bridge, the captain thanks Spock for his decisive actions: “From both of us” [4] .

Remastering

In 2006, for the fortieth anniversary of the series, the remastering of all the series was made. Sound and video changes were made, the computer model of the Enterprise was created. Also in this series the planet was completely redrawn, becoming more realistic [5] .

Criticism

Zack Handlen from The AV Club gave the episode an A-rating, noting that the last act, in his opinion, was redundant, the first two go smoothly. He also liked Shatner as the good Kirk [6] .
