It was founded as a male in 1314 by the bishop of Rostov Prokhor (in the schema of Tryphon) on the site of his miraculous acquisition of the icon of the Virgin ( Tolgskaya icon ), which became the main shrine of the monastery. It was named after the nearby Tolga River. In 1987, after nearly sixty years of closure, re-opened as a female.

On August 7, 1314, the Archbishop of Rostov Prokhor , according to his life , miraculously found on the banks of the Volga, 8 miles from Yaroslavl, the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God . The news of the miraculous appearance of the image of the Mother of God reached Yaroslavl, from where many people of different ranks, ages, and fortunes flocked. By common efforts, the church was rebuilt by noon, and by evening, Archbishop Prokhor consecrated it in the name of the Entry into the Church of the Virgin, introduced the image of the Mother of God, called “Tolgsky” from the small river Tolga that flowed into the Volga at that place, and then established a permanent celebration of her appearance on the eighth day of the month of August. On the same day, Prokhor blessed with this church to be a monastery and identified him as abbot-abbot.
The word “tolga” apparently comes from the disappeared language of the ancient Finno-Ugric people Meria , who previously lived in the territory of the Yaroslavl region. “Tolga” in the Mordovian and Mari ( pestylum ) languages related to the Meryan language means “bird feather”.
In 1553, the monastery was visited by Tsar Ivan the Terrible .
In 1609, during the Time of Troubles, the Poles killed the monks of the Tolgsky Monastery [1]
In 1625, the Cross Exaltation Church was built on the territory of the monastery.
In 1654, the second salvation of Yaroslavl land from a pestilence . In 1652, the St. Nicholas Church was built, and in 1681-1683 - the Vvedensky Cathedral.
In 1763, the monastery was visited by Empress Catherine II .
In 1812, the hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, Lieutenant General Nikolai Tuchkov, was buried in the Spassky Church.
In 1862, Bishop Ignatius (Brianchaninov) came to the Tolgsky monastery. In 1883, Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich visited the monastery.
In 1893, a chapel was built on the territory of the monastery in memory of the monks killed in 1609.
In 1913, in connection with the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty, the Tolgsky monastery was visited by Emperor Nicholas II and his family.
In 1914, the 600th anniversary of the founding of the monastery was celebrated. For the anniversary in the monastery, large repairs and restoration work were carried out under the guidance of its rector Abbot Serafim (Samoilovich) [2] .
In 1928, the Tolgsky monastery was closed by the Soviet authorities.
In December 1987, the Tolgsky Monastery was opened, becoming the first convent in the RSFSR.
In 1988, the relics of Ignatius (Bryanchaninov), acquired in the Nikolo-Babaevsky monastery , were transferred to the Tolgsky monastery.
In September 1990, a memorial plaque was opened on the wall of the Spassky Church in memory of the resting place of the hero of the Battle of Borodino, Lieutenant General Nikolai Tuchkov (Tuchkov 1st).
In 2008, the monastery was visited by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin , who signed a decree on the transfer of all monastery buildings from lease to the ownership of the monastery [3] .
From December 24, 2018 to January 27, 2019, an icon, a particle of relics and an ark with shoes of St. Spiridon of Trimifunsky , who were delivered to the monastery from Corfu, stayed in the monastery [4] .

Behind the stone wall of the monastery, behind a small internal moat with water, a unique park of Siberian cedar has been growing since the 16th century.
