St. Modest, called the Apostle of Carinthia, otherwise - Carantania (Carantania), most likely was an Irish monk, enlightened Alpine Slavs living in the south of modern. Austria and the northeast of sovr. Slovenia .

At the request of the local Prince Heitmar (Cheitmar), otherwise Hotimir St. Modest, being a choreographer , was engaged in the education of those parts under the guidance of St. Virginia of Salzburg approx. 755, along with four priests, a deacon and “another clergy”. According to sources, he built three temples:

  • "Ad Udrimas", probably in the area of Judenburg (modern Styria ),
  • in Liburnia , on the territory of the then diocese of Theurnia , the current St. Peter in Holz ( Sankt Peter in Holz ), not far from Spittal an der Drau ,
  • Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in an unknown place, most likely in the area of Karnburg (aka Krnsky Castle ), where subsequently Maria Zal appeared on the plain of Zollfeld .

The exact date of the death of St. Modest is unknown. It is believed that his grave is located in the modern Gothic church of Maria Zal, built six centuries later. Missionary Acts of St. Modesta is described in Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum , written in Salzburg approx. 870 as a memorandum of the archbishops of Salzburg during a hearing at the court of the Emperor Louis of Germany against St. Methodius , apostle of the Slavs in Pannonia and Moravia , taking place in Ratisbon . In this document, the Archbishopric of Salzburg emphasizes the merits of St. Modest in the conversion of the Slavs.
