History
“So Long” was written by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson, vocals by Agneta Feltskog and Anni-Fried Lingstad . ABBA and their manager, Stig Anderson , took a chance deciding to release this particular song instead of the more anticipated “I've Been Waiting for You” or “ SOS ” because they wanted to show the audience that they were able to play different music. They believed that a song with significant rock elements in the spirit of the Eurovision-winning hit “ Waterloo ” would be a good choice.
However, “So Long” was the worst ABBA track in the charts. Although it became a prominent hit in Sweden, Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany , other countries were not impressed with it. In the UK, she didn’t even hit the charts; This failure provoked a noticeable decrease in the popularity of ABBA, from which (as from the winners of Eurovision) they waited for a resounding success. However, subsequent singles were taken warmer and created a base for the subsequent “abbamania” of the late 1970s.
