In 1905, a road was built across the pass that connects the Italian Aosta ( Italian: Aosta , French Aoste ) with the Swiss Martigny ( French Martigny ). In winter, from October to May, the road is usually closed.

Below the pass, at an altitude of 1915 m there is a tunnel of the same name ( French: Tunnel du Grand-Saint-Bernard ), which was opened in 1964 .

In 1050, a monastery was founded on the pass by Saint Bernard from Menton , with him a mountain shelter , which, like the pass, received his name [2] .

On June 19, 1805, at the request of Napoleon , the French general Dese was buried in the chapel.

The St. Bernard dog breed, which was trained to find people in avalanches, was bred here .
