The presidential election began on August 20, 2009 at the same time as the regional elections. More than 30 people applied for the post of president of Afghanistan, among them two women. The main applicants are incumbent President Hamid Karzai , former Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and former Minister of Planning, deputy of the National Assembly Ramzan Bashardost . [2] [3]
Elections heated the political situation in the country. The Taliban called on the population to boycott the elections, in their leaflets they warned that all voters would become enemies of Islam . Despite the security measures taken, several terrorist attacks took place on the eve of the elections in Kabul and other cities of the country, and more than 70 attacks were carried out by the Taliban during the elections. [4] [5] [6]
Self-withdrawal from the second round of elections of alternative candidate Abdullah Abdullah, as well as a sharp deterioration in the domestic political situation and the threat of new terrorist attacks forced the election commission to decide to cancel the second round of voting. Hamid Karzai was recognized as the elected president [7] .
