The region is divided into sub-regions of Gorna Nitra (districts of Prievidza , Partizansk , Nitra , Topolchany ), Podunaysko ( Shaly district , part of the Partizansky district ), Zagorje , Povazhie ( Miyava district, New Mesto nad Wagom district, Piestany region ) and Trnavsko ( Trnava district, Hlohovec district )

The core of the territory was the territory of the historical Principality of Nitran , which later became part of Great Moravia , and in the X century the oldest committee of Hungary arose in Slovakia .
