Biography

Born in a family of merchants. He graduated from the Tomsk Music College with Jacob Medlin and two courses at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (family circumstances prevented him from completing his education). Since 1912 , he actively played in Krasnoyarsk as a violinist, having in his repertoire virtuoso works by P. Sarasate , G. Venyavsky , K. Saint-Saens , and since 1914 he directed the orchestra of the city theater [1] . In 1919 he was mobilized into the army of Kolchak , served as bandmaster of the 31st Siberian Rifle Regiment of the 8th Siberian Rifle Division.

Announcement of a concert with the participation of the A. Marxon Orchestra, published in the newspaper Krasnoyarsk Worker, 1928

In 1920, Marxon began his pedagogical activity in the People’s Conservatory, then in the music college. At the same time, he continued his concert activity in Krasnoyarsk and other cities of Siberia as a soloist and as a member of chamber ensembles. One of the first popular symphony orchestras in Russia outside the Urals in the 1920s was an orchestra conducted by A. L. Marxon, which performed on the open stage of the city garden, houses of culture and the city theater. The orchestra conducted by Marxon performed in the public performances of the opera La Traviata , Rigoletto , Faust , Mermaid , Eugene Onegin and others that have not yet been documented. The proceeds from the concerts were directed to various funds: the Red Cross , “Airship building”, “Our answer to Chamberlain” , “Helping homeless children”, “Pillars” reserve , “Helping artists of the burnt circus of the city of Irkutsk ”, “Helping the proletariat of Japan”. Together with Peter Slovtsov and choirmaster S. V. Abayantsev, Marxon was the founder in 1928 of the philharmonic society “Music to the Masses”. “Not a single musical event of the city was complete without the participation of Abram Leontyevich and his orchestras” [2] . A.L. Marxon brought up the famous violinists in Krasnoyarsk: Anatoly Arapov, Vadim and Nikolai Buyanov, Stanislav Pudul and Gennady Nazarov.

In February 1938, nine orchestra musicians were charged with the White Guard conspiracy and arrested. On February 21, 1938, Abram Marxon, six days after his arrest, was convicted by a trio of the UNKVD under Article 58 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR and sentenced to capital punishment (execution). The verdict was executed on February 26, 1938 in Krasnoyarsk. As a result of repressions against musicians in the Krasnoyarsk Radio Committee, for some time the broadcasting of music programs stopped.

A.L. Marxon was rehabilitated on May 15, 1956 by a military tribunal of the Siberian Military District for lack of corpus delicti.
