Biography
From the family of a worker, by origin Basque. As a typographer, Rekabarren led a number of printers' strikes and initiated the creation of daily Marxist newspapers in Chile (El Grito Popular, 1911, El Socialista, 1912, El Despertar, 1912, La Vanguardia, 1915 , "La Defensa Obrera", 1917, and others.). In 1906 he was elected deputy of the National Congress of Chile from the Democratic Party, but for revolutionary activities he was soon deprived of his deputy mandate. Repeatedly subjected to harassment and repression. He was the organizer of many workers and trade union circles, a propagandist of Marxism and Leninism.
Rekabarren - one of the founders and leaders of the Socialist Workers Party of Chile (founded in 1912), which in 1922 took the position of the Comintern and became known as Communist. While in exile, he participated in the creation of the Communist Party of Argentina in 1918 and was its first general secretary. In November 1922 — February 1923 he was in the USSR. Upon his return to Chile, he wrote the book “Workers' Russia” and faced harassment from some members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, which coincided with an active campaign against the right-wing forces. He committed suicide. In Soviet historiography, in particular, in the 2nd edition of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, it is stated that Rekabarren "was killed from around the corner by agents of the secret police."
