World Weightlifting Championship

The first world weightlifting championship was held in 1891 in London ( Great Britain ). It was attended by 7 athletes from 6 countries.

In 1898, the second world championship was held in Vienna ( Austria-Hungary ), where the Russian athlete Georg Hackenschmidt took the third place in the sum of all-around events , consisting of 14 exercises. A year later, in Milan ( Italy ), Sergey Eliseev became the first Russian world champion.

In 1905, for the first time at the world championships, weight categories were introduced. Athletes were divided into three categories: up to 70 kg (light weight), up to 80 kg (average weight) and over 80 kg (heavy weight).

At the beginning of the 20th century, the world weightlifting championships were held several times during one year: three times in 1905, two times in 1910, four times in 1911 . Since 1920, personal-team world championships have been held.

In 1949 - 1989, as part of most world championships held on the European continent, European championships were also held. In 1964 , 1968 , 1972 , 1980, and 1984, the World Weightlifting Championships were held as part of the Summer Olympics. Later, during the summer Olympic Games, no world championships were held.

For men in the history of World Championships, the greatest number of medals were won by athletes of the Soviet Union - 331 gold, 208 silver and 93 bronze medals.
