History and Traditions

Mount Hagen was founded in 1934 , when a highway was laid in New Guinea , then under the guardianship of Australia . Named after Kurt von Hagen , a German colonist and official from the times of German New Guinea .

Mount Hagen is a kind of outpost of civilization in this region of the country, as the territories of the hill tribes of New Guinea begin further. However, the city is also one of the most criminogenic places in the country, therefore tourism is poorly developed here.

Mount Hagen is a large shopping center in the mountainous region, with which only the city of Goroka in the province of Eastern Highlands can compete with. Both cities also serve as the venue for the annual Mountain Festival, which brings together representatives of different mountain nationalities to meet, celebrate and resolve disputes.

Each year, Mount Hagen hosts a cultural show, one of the largest cultural events in Papua New Guinea. Various regional, provincial, even national tribal dance groups gather to celebrate their cultural heritage as a sing sing.

Traditional culture and beliefs remain strong in and around Mount Hagen. In 2009 and 2013, it was reported that women were burned alive on charges of witchcraft [3] .
