Demer

Demer ( nderl. Demer , fr. Démer ) - Belgian river flowing through the province of Flemish Brabant and Limburg . The name of the river goes back to the Celtic tam (dark) and ara (water). Demer refers to the basin of the Scheldt . The length of the river is 95 km. The catchment area is 2,200 km².

The source of Demer is in Ketsingen . At first the river flows to the north, but at Bilzen turns to the west. Demer flows through Hasselt , Lummen , Dist , Zichem and Aarschot , and flows into Deyle at Verchter . Through Deila , Rupel and Scheldt , the Demer waters flow into the North Sea . The main tributaries of the Demer are the Herk, Goethe, Velpe, Zvarte-Bek (“Black Creek”), Hulpe, Mott and Winge [2] .

Historical Information

Demer was first mentioned in 870 . According to the Mersen Treaty of Demer, the holding of the deceased of the Lothing King Lothar II , who died in the year 869, was divided by the deceased childless. At that time, however, Demer was called Dale , today Demer is called one of the tributaries Dale .
