Origin

Uygur by nationality, was born in the city of Koshang [1] in China, at birth was named Mark. He was the youngest of the four sons of the Nestorian archdeacon Bainiel. He became a pupil of a hermit Rabban Sauma , and then was tonsured a monk [2] .

Journey to the West

Around 1278, Rabbi Sauma and Mark decided to go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem . Through Tangut , Khotan , and Kashgar, they arrived in Talas , where the headquarters of Haidu Khan , the grandson of Ugedei , who owned Turkestan, was located . Having received letters for safe passage, the monks reached Khorasan , where they visited a Nestorian monastery near the town of Tusa . Arriving in Azerbaijan , they were honored to meet with the Nestorian Catholicos Mar Dynha in the city of Merag .

Having received the blessing of the Catholicos, Rabban Sauma and Mark embarked on a pilgrimage to the holy places of Syria. Through Baghdad, they traveled to the Beth Garmay region, then to Arbela , Mosul , Sinjar , Nisibiy , Mardin, and Jezireh. After that, on the instructions of Mar Dynhi, the monks visited the Abak Khan rate. After visiting the Armenian city of Ani , they intended to continue their way to the Holy Land through Georgia , but upon learning that the road was extremely unsafe, they turned back.

Election of a Catholicos

In 1280, Mark was ordained by Mar Dynha to the Metropolitan of North China under the name of Mar Jabalah. Soon the Catholicos died, and Mar Yabalah was elected head of the church ( 1281 ) with the consent of Abaka-khan.

The description of Mar Yabalakha III’s life was compiled by his close associate Raban Saum, and contains both information about the policy of the Mongolian empire and a visit to Europe with a mission from Ilkhan Argun . In this work, contrary to the genre and spirit of the time, the element of the miraculous is completely absent, with the exception of rare dreams of Mar Jabalahi.

Catholic conversion and union attempt

In May 1304, Jabalah confessed the Catholic faith in a letter addressed to Pope Benedict XI , however, the union was rejected by most Nestorian bishops.
