Project Highlights

In 2005, project author Oleg Minich, Third Way coordinator Pavel Morozov and site administrator Andrei Obozov were charged under article 362 of the Criminal Code of Belarus “ Defamation of the President of Belarus ” (the article provides for a criminal sentence of 2 to 4 years). The reason for the politically motivated persecution of the authorities was the creation of a satirical animation "Multclub" about the Belarusian reality, which featured characters similar to Alexander Lukashenko and his associates. Thanks to the intervention of the international community and the great resonance in the press, the accused escaped arrest.

Subsequently, the authors of the project created two separate creative teams. Oleg Minich worked for the BelSat television channel on the animated series Bulbany. Pavel Morozov created the animation studio “People’s Television”, which created such products as “New Belarusian Tales”, “Grandmother Agafia”, “Agrogorodok”, “Las Bulbas”. Andrei Obozov launched the satirical project "Belarusian Toad", which ceased to exist in 2011.

In 2006, Multclub participated in the annual Transmediale Festival of Arts and Digital Culture in Berlin.

One of the cartoons of the project, “The Power of Pigs,” became the basis for writing a scientific article in the journal PS: Political Science and Politics. An article entitled “Web Cartoons in a Closed Society: Animal Farm as an Allegory of Post-Communist Belarus” was published in April 2007 .
