History

The Moscow New Drama Theater positions itself as a branch of the famous "Mkhatovsky tree" of theaters. The troupe was created on the basis of one of the acting courses of the Moscow Art Theater School. V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko in July 1975. For the audience, the theater opened in the building of the former recreation center Metrostroy on Prokhodchikov street on January 22, 1976 with a performance based on the play by Konstantin Simonov “From Lopatin's Notes”. His initial repertoire consisted of graduate performances by young artists based on plays by Alexander Vampilov , Alexander Volodin , William Saroyan and the musical “My Fair Lady” . The first main director of the theater was the head of the course, director and teacher Viktor Monyukov. After him, for 20 years, the theater was directed by Vitaly Lanskoy and Boris Lvov-Anokhin.

Since 2001, the Moscow New Drama Theater has been headed by the director, Honored Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Dolgachev. Before moving to the theater, he worked for 10 years as a director of the Moscow Art Theater. A.P. Chekhov , where his productions of "After the Rehearsal" by Ingmar Bergman , "Toybel and Her Demon" by Isaac Singer , "Bobok" by Fedor Dostoevsky , "Possible Meeting" by Paul Bartz and others at that time constituted the main repertoire of the Moscow Art Theater. With the advent of Vyacheslav Dolgachev, the theater is actively developing its creative strategy based on the Mkhat principles and the system of K. S. Stanislavsky . For several years, the repertoire was completely updated, relying on young actors, the troupe was rebuilt, and, thanks to the originality of the repertoire and the high artistic quality of each performance, the theater ranks among the best Moscow theaters. With the opening of the Workshop scene in 2008, artists and directors have the opportunity to experiment with avant-garde drama material.

Today, the theater’s repertoire includes more than 30 titles, including performances for children. These are plays by Alexander Ostrovsky and Carlo Goldoni , Tennessee Williams and Friedrich Schiller , Ingmar Bergman and Sam Shepard , Yukio Mishima and Maurice Meterlink , prose by Anton Chekhov , Fedor Dostoevsky , Mikhail Lermontov and contemporary Russian authors. Moscow New Drama Theater showed its performances in France, USA, Switzerland, Turkey. The troupe is a regular participant in international theater festivals and rarely returns without prizes and awards.
