Geographical position

The village is located in the western part of the district, on the right high bank of the Dniester River , on a watershed ledge, known as the “Kitskansky cape” between the valleys of the Dniester and Botna rivers. The village is located 22 km from the district center and 8 km from the Tiraspol railway station. The Kizkans historically occupied an exceptionally advantageous transport and trade-geographical position on the routes from the center of the Principality of Moldova along the Dniester to Belgorod, from Budzhak to Podolia. Now the village is conveniently located near Tiraspol - the main consumer of agricultural products Kitskan. The locality is of crucial strategic importance, as it controls the approaches to the crossing across the Dniester and the dominant height - “Kitskansky cape” (158.1 m), or the so-called Kitskansky bridgehead , which played a decisive role in the Iasi-Chisinau operation of 1944. This height served as a convenient point for artillery shelling of settlements in the Dniester Valley, which the Nazis used in 1944 and the armed forces of Moldova during the armed conflict in 1992. The village is part of the Tiraspol-Bendery agglomeration .

Nature

Floodplain soils in the vicinity of Chitskan are highly fertile and suitable for growing vegetables and grain crops. The slopes of the “Kitskansky cape” have a corner and exposure, favoring viticulture and gardening. The proximity of the Dniester and the floodplains of Botna creates exceptional conditions for irrigation, fishing and fish farming. The vast floodplain Kitskansky forest has traditionally been of great economic and recreational importance both for the village and for Tiraspol located near.

The name of the village is translated from the Romanian language as shrews . Kitskany village was founded in 1367. Kizkans are first mentioned in documents of 1527 [7] . However, archaeological sites in the vicinity of the village indicate the presence of people here long before the foundation of the village. Among them stand out Verkhny Trayanov Val , Geth settlement, burial grounds , mound complexes.

The population of Kitskan in the XVII-XVIII centuries. was subject to sharp fluctuations due to the constant Tatar raids, the involvement of villagers in the construction and repair of the Bendery fortress and roads, the flight of peasants beyond the Dniester to the Zaporizhia Sich , to Slobozhanshchina, Podolia and Galicia . Given the nature and intensity of economic activity, especially the topography of the village, it can be assumed that in the middle of the 18th century there were 30–40 yards in the village and no more than 150–200 people lived.

In 1812, along with the annexation of Bessarabia, the village became part of the Russian Empire in the future as part of the Bendery district of Bessarabia . A significant role in the life of the village was played by the Novo-Nyametsky Holy Ascension Monastery founded in 1859. In 1861, the monastery received the ownership of 1859 acres of forest land. In 1862, the state village of Kitskany was transferred to the ownership of the monastery. 272 Kizkan and Kopan families fall into semi-serf dependency. The best lands of the village were transferred to the monastery. Many Kizkans were forced to relocate to the cities and villages of the Left Bank.
