Biography
Georg Böhm was born in 1661 in Hohenkirchen ( Thuringia , Germany ). His father, the local organist Balthazar Böhm, became his first music teacher. Boehm studied at Jena University .
In 1693, he settled in Hamburg , which at that time was an important cultural center and where the influence of Italian music was noticeable (thanks to the Hamburg Opera). Böhm worked for several years in Hamburg, studying with the famous organist Reinken .
Boehm later moved to Luneburg , where French music was most influential. In 1698 Boehm became an organist of the church John, where he served until his death in 1733 .
Impact on JS Bach
In 1775 , Johann Sebastian’s son Carl Philip Emanuel told Forkel that his father “loved and studied the works of the Lüneburg organist Georg Böhm”. Bach met Boehm and his work when he was in Luneburg in 1700 - 1703 . (at that time he studied at the church of St. Michael).
Creativity
Boehm is known for compositions for organ and harpsichord (mainly preludes , fugues and partits ). Many of his works can be played on different instruments, be it an organ, harpsichord or clavichord , depending on what the performer has at his disposal. Boehm’s music is remarkable in that it was written in a “fantastic style”, that is, a style based on improvisation.
Choral Partitas
Böhm's greatest contribution to North German clavier music was the choral partitas - works consisting of several variations on the choral melody. Boehm was the progenitor of this musical form. He wrote several partitas of different lengths in different keys. Other composers, primarily I.S.Bach, also wrote partitas and studied in this with Boehm. Boehm’s partitas can be played with equal success on the organ and harpsichord, while the standard partitas were usually recorded on two staves, not three. A performer of music on an organ for which a pedal part is placed on the third line is free to choose to play the work only with his hands, or to play the lower voice on the pedal keyboard.
