Zhanzhan ( Chinese ex. 湛然 , pinyin : Zhànrán ) (711–782) - Buddhist mentor, patriarch of the Tiantai school.
The residence of Zhanzhan was the Gotsinsky Monastery in the Tiantishan Mountains. He was invited to the court by three successive successors on the throne of the emperor of the Tang Dynasty, but he invariably refused, citing illness. He became famous for his successful polemic with representatives of other Buddhist movements. Under Zhanzhang, and largely thanks to his efforts, Tiantai School reached its peak.
The main of the ten works of Zhanzhan are “Zhi guan and le” (“Examples of the content of direct contemplation”), “Jinggan bei” (“Diamond stele”).
