Jacques de Creussol (1460–1525), the governor of Dauphiné and the great chamberlain of France under Charles VIII , married in 1486 to the heir of Viscountry Uzés . Among the first became the holder of the newly established Order of St. Michael . His descendants lived at the Paris court, and as a country house they preferred to the medieval castle of Kruussol a more comfortable three-tower residence in Uzes (the so-called “duchy”, le Duché ).
Antoine de Creussol (1528-73), one of the leaders of the Huguenots , received the title of Duke of Uzes from King Charles IX . This was due to the fact that the wife of Krussol, Louise de Clermont , hereditary Countess Tonner , being a close friend of Queen Catherine de Medici , was put by her to the future King Charles as a governess. Of interest to historians is her voluminous correspondence with Elizabeth of England .
On the eve of the St. Bartholomew night, Krussol received an indication from the king about the desirability of the conversion to Catholicism , which he did. To fight his former co-religionists, Krussol was sent to rule the Dauphiné, Provence and Languedoc , where the problem of the spread of Calvinism was most acute. The couple of Crussoles built several unique monuments of the French Renaissance - the mysterious castle of Mont and the castle like Saint-Privas , which received a royal visit.
Dukes of Uzes
During the 17th and 18th centuries, Krussoli didn’t glorify himself, but when asked by the king about why there was not a single marshal of France in his family, one of the dukes retorted: “Because my ancestors died before they had time to curry favor!”. It was Krussol as the first peer of France who was the last in history to shout out the famous phrase: “ The king is dead, long live the king! "(After the death of Louis XVIII ).
In the XIX century, the Krussoli became one of the leaders of the royalists . Especially known was the Duchess Anna d'Uzes (nee Rochechouart-Mortemar ), heir to the vineyards of Veuve Clicquot , who donated 3 million francs in support of General Boulanger . She was the first in France to receive driving license (1889). Her son, Duke Jacques de Creussol-Uzès , died in 1893 during a scientific trip to Africa, in Cabinda . In the prewar Paris, the Marquis of Krussol held one of the last aristocratic salons .
