Hurt (Nine Inch Nails song)

“Hurt” (from the English - “Pain”) is the song of the American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails , the final track of their second studio album, The Downward Spiral . On April 17, 1995, the song was released by a promotional single, thereby becoming the last single from The Downward Spiral . Hurt is not part of the NIN Halo release numbering system. However, one of the single's CD editions was erroneously numbered as Halo 10 ; some time later, Nine Inch Nails Further Down the Spiral received this marking.

Overview

Song

Hurt is a slow track at 80 beats per minute. On the promo CD, the song is presented in several original and censored editions: an album version containing distorted guitar sound and noise effects , a “muffled” version, which has absolutely clear sound, and a concert recording. Some time later, a muffled version of "Hurt" appeared on the remix album NIN Further Down the Spiral [2] and as part of the 2004 anniversary reissue of The Downward Spiral [3] .

The text of the song “Hurt” contains references to self-mutilation and heroin addiction, however, the meaning of the song is interpreted differently [4] . Some listeners believe that the song is a suicide note written by the protagonist of The Downward Spiral , while others claim that the lyrics of the composition describe the difficult process of finding a reason to continue living, despite depression and heartache [5] .

The composition has gained popularity and has since been regularly performed by the group during concert tours [6] [7] [8] [9] . During the joint mini-tour of Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie Dissonance , Reznor and Bowie, on the same stage, performed "Hurt" [10] [11] [12] .

In 2007, an instrumental version of the song was released on the Nine Inch Nails website remix.nin.com , where any user can create their own remix of the track.

“Hurt” was featured in one episode of the television series “The Slaughter Department, ” in the film “ Bachelor Party: Part III, ” performed by actor Ken Jong [13] , as well as in the final episode of the second season of the animated series “ Rick and Morty ” (Season 2, 10 series, “The Wedding Squanchers”).

Video Clip

Frame from the video "Hurt"

The video was originally shot by Simon Maxwell. But the shooting process was not completed and as a result, a live video was edited for broadcast on MTV . The video shows the scene in which Trent Reznor performs the song “Hurt”. In the background is a huge canvas. Projections are projected on it, one way or another, related to injustice, suffering and pain, for example, war crimes , a nuclear bomb test , surviving Soviet soldiers and civilians after the Battle of Stalingrad . Also, the video was interrupted by images with a snake and a chameleon, looking directly at the camera lens, a dying fox and fading plants.

In 1997, the clip was published on the Closure video album [14] , in 2004 on the re-release of The Downward Spiral for DualDisc, and in 2005 the Collected promo collection [15] [16] was included. And And That That Could Have Been and Beside You in Time featured a video of a later concert performance of “Hurt” that was different from this.

Perception

Jason Mendelssohn and Eric Klinger of PopMatters , in a retrospective review of The Downward Spiral , concluded that “Hurt”, despite the sharp contrast with the rest of the tracks on the record, is “a great song that obscures anger and gives a tiny bit of hope” . “Reznor was able to create a great melody without the use of drum machines , synthesizers and industrial noise, ” Mendelssohn and Klinger calculated [17] . Steve Hugh, a reviewer at Allmusic , expressed a similar view: ““ Hurt is a mixture of drama and introspection, Reznor has not managed to do this before ” [18] .

In 1996, “Hurt” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category “ Best Rock Song ” [19] , but lost to Alanis Morissette 's track “ You Oughta Know ”. In 2009, NME magazine editor Luke Lewis “Hurt” was listed as “The Top 20 Gothic Tracks”; there the song was assigned to 3rd place [20] . On February 8, 2014, the NME version of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time was published, with Hurt at 410th position [21] .

Cover versions

Many musicians performed the song "Hurt"; among them were Tori Amos , Peter Murphy , Aaron Lewis , Sevendust , Breaking Benjamin and many others. But special attention was drawn to the public by the cover version of " Hurt " from famous country singer Johnny Cash , recorded in 2002 for the album American IV: The Man Comes Around . The performance of Cache has earned many favorable reviews from music observers [22] [23] [24] . Reznor also liked the cover version; Trent stated that she was touched by her [25] [26] . The video clip was shot by Mark Romanek - it contains scenes from the life of Cash. The video was awarded a Grammy Award in the category “ Best Music Video ” [27] . It was later named the best video of all time according to the editorial board of NME magazine [28] .

British singer Leona Lewis also recorded her version of this song, published on her debut mini-album Hurt: The EP . The cover received a very mixed reaction from critics. So, Lewis Corner from Digital Spy praised Leona's rock interpretation, describing the singer's vocals as “chilling falsetto ” [4] . Nevertheless, there were also negative reviews due to stereotyping and a strong departure from the mood of the original song [29] [30] .
