Early life
Platt was born in Staten Island , New York . He studied at Princeton University , specializing in Romance languages, but later moved to the Juilliard School to study music. There he learned to be an opera singer. Before the United States entered World War II, he sang with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, which played in musicals such as Penz Pirates and Mikado. While serving in the US Army was a radio operator. Immediately after the war, he continued to work on the radio.
Career
He made his Broadway debut in Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein 's Allegro musical. He played in his first film thanks to help from Jose Ferrer, who made him company in the film "Shrike". Ferrer and Platt played several parts in the film in 1955. Also in 1955, he appeared in the movie Rebel Without a Cause , along with James Dean , Natalie Wood, and Sal Mineo . Platt returned to Broadway in 1958 with the musical “Oh Captain!”, Where he played a romantic role. In 1959, he played with Cary Grant as a lawyer in Alfred Hitchcock's film “ North to Northwest ”. In 1959, Platt starred in The Rebel Set , which was shown on television as The Mysterious Theater of the Year 3000. In 1961, Platt played the role of high priest of Azores in the adventure science fiction film Atlantis, the Continent of Perdition . In 1962, Edward Platt played the role of judge in the movie " Cape of Fear " with Gregory Peck .
Platt also played cameo roles in the series Perry Mason , Bonanza , Beyond the Possible , and Twilight Zone .
The most famous role of Platt came to him in the 1960s, when he agreed to the role of Chef in the comedy spy television series " Get Smart ." After the end of the series, he played various episodic roles.
Death
Edward Platt is believed to have died of a heart attack in 1974 at the age of 58. In August 2007, the TV series “Get Smart” wrote an interview with a man claiming to be Edward Platt's son, Jeff, in which he stated that his father had died as a result of suicide due to depression and financial difficulties. Edward Platt left four children from two marriages and a brother living in Santa Barbara , California . His ashes were scattered over the sea.
