Community History

In 1881-1882, the book-makers Stepan Vasiliev and his friend Ivan Bocharov began to conduct systematic gospel readings [1] . In 1903, F. S. Savelyev visited Petersburg . He had a meeting with the Pashkovites (later evangelical Christians) and asked them to send preachers of the Gospel to Moscow to teach the believers holy water baptism. The brothers responded to the request of F. S. Savelyev and sent Vasily Ivanovich Dolgopolov and Nikolai Yakovlevich Yakovlev [2] . Soon the Moscow Community of Evangelical Christians was formed, whose leader F. S. Savelyev was elected. In 1909, the Moscow community moved to a legal position [2] .

Soviet period

On April 23, 1917, the opening of the prayer house of evangelical Christians took place in the premises of the former Evangelical Reformed Church . The Reformed Church at that time brought together about 20 people, but continued its services until 1920 .

In 1928, the church sheltered the Lutheran community of St. Michael , which gathered in the church until the final liquidation of the Lutheran community in 1933 . During the rule of atheism in the country, the church was subjected not only to legislative oppression, but also to the arbitrariness of local authorities. In 1937, the premises of the church building were transferred to a hostel, and the nearby seminary building was transferred to a school [2] . Despite this, the church did not stop its ministry. After the closure of the Anglican, Lutheran and other churches, this church in Maly Vuzovsky Lane (now Malyy Trekhsvyatitelsky) remained the only active Protestant church in Moscow during the Soviet era. In 1940, by decision of the authorities, the Moscow Seventh-day Adventist community was transferred to the church building [2] .

Church service, 1958

In 1944, the union of evangelical Christians and Baptists took place within the walls of the church.

In the 1960s, the community faced the problem of cramped conditions and took the initiative to local authorities to relocate residents from the church building to comfortable apartments. In 1965, together with the All-Union Council of Evangelical Baptist Christians, three three-room apartments in Moscow were bought for 65,000 rubles [2] (more than $ 100,000 ) and transferred to people living in the church building.

On May 28, 1972, US President Richard Nixon , who was in the USSR on an official visit from May 22, 1972, visited the Moscow Central Church of Evangelical Christians-Baptists [3] .

In 1982, the church celebrated the centenary of the evangelical movement in Moscow [1] .

Building

Front door

The church building is located in the White City on Kulishki , a historic district in the center of Moscow . It was rebuilt in 1865 by the architect Hermann von Nissen [4] in the eclectic style of a residential building of the 1820-1830s and was intended for the Reformed Church. In 1917 , after most members of the Reformed community left Russia, the building was transferred to the community of evangelical Christians, who in 1944 merged with the Baptists . Seventh-day Adventist Church services have also been held in the building since 1940. The services of the Baptists and Adventists were held separately, at different times.

In 1946, due to the increase in the number of parishioners, two galleries with 500 seats were built along the walls of the prayer hall, and choirs were significantly increased in front of the organ.

Authority

The organ of the Moscow Central Church of Evangelical Christians-Baptists is a unique monument of 19th-century German romanticism by the famous German artist Ernst Röver ( German: Ernst Röver , 1857–1923). His majestic instruments sounded in the cathedrals of Magdeburg , Halberstadt , Stendal and others. Most of them were lost during the Second World War or underwent significant restructures in the postwar years. The construction of the organ was carried out for two years at the expense of the community, which raised the necessary amount through private donations - 8,000 rubles, it was installed in 1898 and has not undergone any changes since then, therefore it has preserved its original sound appearance to this day. The organ with pneumatic game and register trajectories has 38 registers, 3 manuals and a pedal. He is the only instrument of Ernst Rover outside Germany and the number of registers in fifth place in Moscow after the bodies established in the House of Music , Concert Hall. Tchaikovsky , Catholic Cathedral and the Great Hall of the Conservatory .

In 1990, the instrument was registered as a monument of history and culture [5] . In 2012, the restoration of the organ was completed.
