MTV

MTV ( MTV , originally the literal abbreviation of Music Television ) is an American cable and satellite channel owned by Viacom Media Networks (a division of Viacom ) and headquartered in New York . Created on August 1, 1981, the TV channel initially broadcast music videos, and the leading people on the air were known as VJs . In the early years, the main target audience of MTV were young people, but today they are primarily teenagers, especially schoolchildren and students. In recent years, MTV has significantly reduced the number of music programs, and now its broadcasting consists mainly of programs reflecting current issues, comedy and drama television shows and some offline syndicated programs and films with limited music video software during off-peak periods of time. He has been criticized for this change of focus, both on certain segments of his audience and on musicians. The influence of MTV on its audience, including issues related to censorship and social activity, has also been discussed for several years.

In recent years, MTV has struggled with the decline of music-related cable media. It was believed that his ratings are systematically falling, as younger viewers are increasingly switching to digital media, and the annual ratings are reduced to 29%. Thus, doubts arose about the long-term relevance of MTV for young viewers. In April 2016, MTV announced that it would begin to return to its original musical roots with the reintroduction of the classic MTV series “ MTV Unplugged” . After nine years of vacation, will return in October 2017.

As of July 2015, about 92 million US households (79.2% of households with television) could receive MTV.

MTV spawned many related television channels in the United States and affiliated TV channels internationally, some of which became independent over time.

History

The broadcast of a channel devoted to contemporary popular music, MTV (Music Television), began in the USA on August 1, 1981. The concept of the channel appeared in 1978 - as a music channel of the local cable network in Columbus , Ohio . MTV's nationwide broadcasting began on August 1, 1981 (although the first broadcasts were available only to a New Jersey resident).

The first video shown on MTV was "Video Killed the Radio Star" ( Russian Video killed a radio star ) by The Buggles. Success immediately came to MTV - in a short time it already totaled two million viewers. Meanwhile, MTV was also accused of racism - in the early years of its existence, MTV mainly showed video clips of white performers (for which the channel’s leaders argued that the production of black musicians’s video clips was insignificant). The situation changed with the release of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean video in 1983: this and the subsequent musician’s video clips were caught in a permanent rotation of the channel. Pretty soon, record companies saw in MTV a huge marketing tool, and almost all new singles were accompanied by video clips, which many artists turned into mini-movies.

In 1984, MTV launched its first Top 20 Video Countdown hit parade. In the same year, awards began to be held for the most popular music videos on the channel (MTV Video Music Awards). In 1985, the channel for the first time appeared social advertising safe sex .

On August 1, 1987, the European branch of MTV, MTV Europe , started broadcasting with the video Money for Nothing, which in subsequent years licensed the creation of many national MTV channels in Europe.

Currently, the MTV brand under license uses a large number of television companies around the world.

Format

Initially, the MTV broadcasting schedule was a round-the-clock rotation of music video clips, the number of which was increasing intensively. Then thematic music programs began to appear (“120 Minutes”, “Yo! Raps”, “Coca-Cola”, “Report”, “Most Wanted”, “Greatest Hits”, “The Soul on MTV”, etc.); in 1993, the first personal animated series appeared ( Beavis and Butt-head ). In the late 1990s, MTV significantly changed its format, giving the main airtime to various shows, TV shows, etc. The music itself was moved to various specialized TV channels created by MTV (VH1, MTV2, MTV Jams, MTV Music, etc.).

In 2000, MTV began showing the Eccentric series.
