Having completed his study of rhetoric and grammar at the University of Salamanca , he left for Italy at the age of 19, where he continued his studies at the University of Bologna , fully devoting himself, apart from other subjects, to Latin, Greek , Jewish languages and grammar.
Returning to Spain in 1473, he taught at the universities of Seville and Salamanca, compiled a Latin grammar, developed Latin-Spanish and Spanish-Latin dictionaries, and composed a number of other linguistic works. Nebriha is rightfully considered the founder of philological science in Spain.
The book of Nebriha “ Grammar of the Spanish Language ” ( Spanish: Gramática castellana , 1492) is the first complete description of the grammar of the Spanish language. The book has been reprinted several times, used or imitated by the authors of subsequent grammars. The Rules of Spanish Spelling, published a little later ( Reglas de ortografía española , 1517), essentially repeating what was stated in the Grammar, contain formulations of the general principles of graphics and their application to the Spanish language.
