Biography
James Chambers was born into a family of amateur musicians. He started making music at the age of 10. From 1938 to 1941, he studied at the Curtis Institute of Music under the supervision of Anton Horner . After graduation, he worked for a year in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra , then led by conductor Fritz Rainer . In 1942, Chambers became a soloist and horn player in the Philadelphia Orchestra . Then in 1946 he moved to the New York Philharmonic Orchestra , where he spent most of his professional career. In the same year, he began teaching at the Juilliard School of Art . In 1969, James Chambers was forced to stop performing for health reasons, but for another 18 years he served as manager of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1979, Chambers was elected an honorary member of the International Horn Society .
