Biography

Born January 1, 1956 in Paris in a family of university teachers. First, Christine chose a sports career for herself - she was part of the synchronized swimming team of France, became the bronze medalist of the national championship. After the early death of his father, his sports career was over. “When I was seventeen, I received a scholarship from the American Field Service (an international organization that organizes the exchange of students around the world) and spent the whole year in the United States. Another country, a foreign language, another education system at first caused a shock. And then I realized what be global means ... ”

Higher education received at the University of Paris X - Nanterre and at the Institute for Political Studies Aix-en-Provence .

Since 1981, she worked as a lawyer in one of the largest law and consulting firms in the world - Baker & McKenzie , Chicago . For a total of 25 years, Christine Lagarde worked at Baker & McKenzie, where she made a career and in 1999 became the first woman to head this organization. Under Lagarde’s leadership, the Chicago-based law office doubled its turnover and earned more than $ 1 billion in 2004. In 2002, the Wall Street Journal Europe placed Christine Lagarde in fifth place in Europe’s list of outstanding business women. In addition, from 1995 to 2002, she worked at the Center for International & Strategic Studies ( Center for International & Strategic Studies ), where she headed one of the commissions together with Zbigniew Brzezinski . In 2005, French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffaren persuaded Lagarde to take a sharp turn in his career - return to France and get involved in politics. Since June 2, 2005 - Minister-Delegate for Foreign Trade [4] . Since May 18, 2007 - Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries of France [5] . From March 18, 2008 - Minister of Economy, Industry and Employment of France, and from November 14, 2010 to June 29, 2011 - Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry of France [6] [7] . Lagarde is the first woman in this post. Dominic Strauss-Kahn spoke skeptically of Lagarde: “The word“ respect ”is hardly appropriate to describe our relationship with Madame Lagarde,” he said. “She's incompetent, it's just a beautiful facade.” Lagarde shocked many with her American directness. A few months after being appointed Minister of Finance, she announced publicly: "If gasoline is too expensive, the French need to transfer to bicycles." Journalists compared her to Marie Antoinette , who is credited with the phrase “ Do the people have no bread? So let them eat cakes ”, and Madame Tactlessness dubbed her (Fr. La gaffe,“ tactlessness ”, consonant with the surname Lagarde) [8] .

On February 19, 2016, the Board of Directors of the International Monetary Fund re-elected Christine Lagarde to the post of IMF Managing Director [10] . She held the position until July 2019, until she resigned. [11]

Accusations of criminal negligence and corruption

On December 17, 2015 in Paris, an official representative of the Court of the Republic announced that the Head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, would appear before a French court. The former finance minister of France is one of the defendants in the “Tapi case” and is accused of criminal negligence [12] . We are talking about the sale by a well-known businessman and politician Bernard Tapi in 1993 of a controlling interest in Adidas. To conclude a deal, a consortium was created under the management of the state bank Credit Lyonnais. After the sale, Tapi accused the bank of fraud and demanded damages. In 2007, on the initiative of Lagarde, the case was transferred to arbitration, by the decision of which the entrepreneur received over 400 million euros from the financial state institution in compensation. In 2013, the consortium filed a complaint against the arbitration decision. Tapi was later charged with fraud in a criminal group. In February 2015, the cassation court overturned the arbitration decision. And in early December, the court ruled that Tapi should return the 400 million euros he received. The investigation accuses Lagarde of criminal negligence, which led to the illegal embezzlement of state funds and the payment of more than 400 million euros of them to Bernard Tapi. The transfer of the case to court was an unexpected decision, as the prosecutor insisted on ending the investigation against Lagarde. The head of the IMF himself assesses the allegations as "absolutely unproven." The representative of the IMF said that by decision of the board of directors Lagarde could continue to work as the head of this organization [13] .
