Service History

“Mutsu” was laid down on June 1, 1918 , launched on May 31, 1920, and entered service in October 1921 .

In 1927 and in 1933, Emperor Hirohito was on the ship during military exercises. From 1933 to 1936, the Mutsu underwent modernization, as did the same type Nagato.

From December 1941 to June 1942, exercises were constantly conducted on the battleship. In the Battle of Midway Atoll , Mutsu was part of the main forces of the squadron of Admiral Yamamoto , but did not take any active action.

He participated in the battle of the Eastern Solomon Islands.

Doom

June 8, 1943 at 12.13 in the Hiroshima Gulf , between Hashirajima and the islands of Suo-Oshima on the "Mutsu" there was an explosion of the cellars of the feed towers. He was the first to be seen on the battleship Nagato , which was heading to Hashirajima that day. The first to the scene of the explosion were two boats from the battleship Fuso , which took on board most of the surviving sailors. Boats from the Mogami and Tatsuta cruisers also arrived at the crash site , and the destroyers Tamanami and Wakatsuki approached. An anti-submarine alert was announced in the disaster area, as the first version of what happened was an underwater attack. However, the main cause of the explosion is, most likely, the negligence of the crew. After the explosion, the ship broke into two parts and sank. Of the 1474 crew members, Mutsu managed to save 353 people. Among the dead were the battleship commander Miyoshi and senior officer Ono Koro . On the battleship was also a group of 113 sea pilots, of which only 13 people were saved. With the complete superiority of American aviation, the death of a hundred pilots for the Japanese was an extremely unfortunate loss.

In July 1944, the Japanese managed to pump out 580 tons of fuel from the Mutsu, which in the face of a severe shortage of fuel was of great importance, but it was not possible to lift the ship.
