The son of Emperor Basil I and Eudoxia Ingerina . It is believed that the real father of Stephen and his brother, Leo , the future emperor, was the predecessor of Basil I - Emperor Michael III , because before marrying Basil I, Evdokia was the mistress of Michael III.
Since childhood, Stephen was tonsured a monk.
After accession to the throne, Emperor Leo VI removed Patriarch Photius and installed his brother, 18-year-old Stephen, in his stead. [one]
Becoming the youngest patriarch, Stefan did not leave behind any significant deeds. After his death in 893 , Emperor Leo VI , on the advice of his minister, Stilian Zautzi, appointed Anthony to the patriarchal department.
