Patus [4] ( port. Lagoa dos Patos [5] , Patos [3] ) is a shallow lake located on the coast in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil [4] .

It is the largest lagoon in the world [5] . It is the second largest in Latin America and the largest in Brazil.
It is 241 km long and has a maximum width of 48 km [3] [1] . The total area of 10140 km² [2] . The average depth is 5 m [2] , the greatest - 10 m. Separated from the Atlantic Ocean by an alluvial sand spit [3] [1] . In the northwestern part is the city of Porto Alegre . The narrow channel Patus Lake is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, the San Goncalu Canal - with Lake Lagoa Mirin [6] [7] .
Large hydroelectric power stations, oil and salt production, fishing [3] , shipping [6] are located on the lake . Intensive soil erosion occurs in the catchment basin, irrigation is developed, and coal is being mined [5] .
